This graduate-level English course at American Islamic College focuses on academic reading and writing for students at the C1–C2 levels of the CEFR. It is designed to strengthen the ability to critically analyze complex academic texts and produce advanced, research-based writing. The course emphasizes logical structure, argument development, and the integration of scholarly sources. Special attention is given to developing core research skills, including the proper citation of sources and consistent use of academic style conventions.

The self-understanding for all traditions (for example, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and classical and modern thought) revolves around their respective conception of “truth,” “goodness,” and “beauty.” The greatest minds and spirits in these traditions dedicated the best years of their lives trying to understand and embody these ideals. This course will be a close study of primary texts that describe the journey of individual thinkers in this quest. The main purpose of this inquiry is to become familiar with the different paths and methods that have been adopted in its pursuit—not to reach a definitive description of truth, goodness, and beauty. An important secondary purpose is to become familiar with the role that the “liberal arts” have played in fostering and furthering these pursuits. This survey will show that the liberal arts have not only contributed to the self-understanding of each of these different traditions but also served as a bridge between them—fostering dialogue and catalyzing the exchange of ideas.
