Lakes of the Volkhov basin #005
A channel extending from the northern part of Lake Udomlya connects it with Lake Navolok, which is also a fairly extensive body of water belonging to the Uveri River basin. In the upper reaches, this river is connected with a number of large karst lakes — Lyuto, Sheregodro, Yamnoye. The area occupied by Lake Lyuto is 3.6 km2. The water in it is brownish in color, mud lies at the bottom and near the shores. As if trying to solve the mystery of the periodic disappearance of the lake, to find out what lurks in its depths, the forest surrounding the reservoir looks into the dark water. Only on the northern shore of its trees are thinning, giving way to arable land. The depth of Lake Lyuto reaches 18 m. Lake Sheregodro is the same depth, 1.5 km from which the house-museum of A. V. Suvorov is located in the village of Konchanskoe-Suvorovskoye. The outlines of Lake Sheregodro resemble a horseshoe in shape. In the center of it, between the two islands, is Ponor. From the islands, it can be seen how the current circles small twigs and dry leaves above it. The last time the lake went underground was in the winter of 1939-40. There is an assumption that the Sitnitsa River once originated from Lake Sheregodro, but a karst sinkhole formed on its way. The streams that fed the Sitnitsa washed away the sinkhole, and it turned into a whole lake, which now bears the name of Lake Yamnoye. The water leaves it twice a year — in the second half of summer, during the summer autumn, and in winter, during the winter autumn. Across the Pelenka River, Lake Lyuto was connected to another karst reservoir, Lake Peleno. It lies 2 km south of Lake Lyuto and is about the same area. The greatest depth of Peleno Lake is 8 m. Its bottom, like all karst reservoirs, is uneven, with pits, but the water is light, and the shores are pleasant and sandy. There are many rocks along the lake shore in places. As a rule, the water leaves Lake Peleno in the second half of summer. Village boys are usually just waiting for this day. Running along the exposed bottom, they catch the fish remaining in the puddles with their hands. Approximately 10-15 km north of these lakes lies another group of karst reservoirs, probably interconnected by underground watercourses. And although all of them belong to the Molot River basin, it is worth saying at least a few words about them. The water regime of these reservoirs is very peculiar. The Molodilinsky chain includes lakes Dolgoye, Chernoe, Beloe, Rogovets, Krestovatoe (Molodilno), Orekhovo, Bolshoe Kletno and Maloe Kletno, Slidye, Stekhina Puddle, Kamennik, Karaseva Puddle, Belenke, Dubno and, finally, another Black Lake. The Blue lake of the Molodilinsky chain has nothing to do with karst, which, by the way, is also very interesting.
