Arabic Language Institute

Summer Intensive 2022

The American Islamic College Arabic Language Institute will offer two 10-week intensive classes (Elementary and Intermediate levels) this summer, God willing. Each class is equivalent to two academic semesters (one full year) of Arabic study. In addition, Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowship graduate students will be able to complete a special, enhanced course of 140 contact hours by supplementing our regular, 120-hour intensive intermediate level course with an additional 20 contact hours as explained below.

The ALI Summer Intensive will offer simultaneous in-person and online instruction this summer.

Elementary level Modern Standard Arabic

(ARA 101 & 102)

Prerequisite: None, this is a course for beginners
Credit hours: Eight (8) = 120 contact hours
Dates: May 16 – July 21 (10 weeks, 3 hrs./day, four days per week)
Days: Monday – Thursday
Timing: 10:00am – 1:00pm CST (Tentative)
Venue: Online (via Zoom)
Textbook: Ahlan Wa Sahlan, by Mahdi Alosh and Allen Clark.
Tuition (excluding textbook costs): $250/credit hour ($2000 for the full 8 credit course) for students seeking academic credit; $150/credit hour ($1200 for the full 8-credfit course) for auditors/students not interested in the academic credit.

Intermediate level Modern Standard Arabic

(ARA 201 & 202)

Prerequisite: At least two semesters of Elementary Arabic (ARA 101 & 102 or equivalent)
Credit hours: Eight (8) = 120 contact hours
Dates: May 16  – July 21  (10 weeks, 3 hrs./day, four days per week)
Days: Monday – Thursday
Timing: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm CT (Tentative)
Venue: Online (via Zoom)

Tuition (excluding textbook costs): $250/credit hour ($2000 for the full 8 credit course) for students seeking academic credit; $150/credit hour ($1200 for the full 8-credfit course) for auditors/students not interested in the academic credit.

FLAS Fellowship compliant Intermediate level Modern Standard Arabic

(ARA 201 & 202)

This course is designed to meet FLAS requirements of 140 contact hours for the Intermediate level. It will be taught in conjunction with our regular 120-hour intensive Intermediate course, supplemented with a total of 20 hours of language drills and co-curricular activities.

Prerequisite: At least one academic year of Elementary Arabic (ARA 101-102 or equivalent)
Credit hours: Nine (9) = 140 contact hours
Dates: May 16 – July 21  (10 weeks, 3 hrs./day, four days per week)
Days: Monday – Thursday, plus two additional hours on Fridays.
Timing: (M-Th) 10:00 – 1:00 CT and (F) 10:00am – 12:00pm CT for supplementary language drills, co- curricular activities, and culture related experiences.
Venue: Online (via Zoom)
Textbook: Ahlan Wa Sahlan, by Mahdi Alosh and Allen Clark.
Tuition (excluding textbook costs): $250/credit hour ($2250 for the full 9 credit course) for students seeking academic credit

Quranic Arabic

Prerequisite: At least one semester of Elementary Arabic (ARA 101 or equivalent)
Credit hours: Three (3) = 45 contact hours
Dates: May 16  – July 21 (4.5 hours/week; 10 weeks)
Days: Saturday and Sunday evenings
Timing: 5:30 pm – 7:45 pm CST
Venue: Online
Textbooks: A New Arabic Grammar of the Arabic language, by Haywood and Nahmad & Arabic Through Quran, by Allen Jones.
Tuition (excluding textbook costs): $600 for the course

Introduction to Quranic recitation (tajwīd) class

Prerequisite: At least one semester of Elementary Arabic (ARA 101 or equivalent)
Credit hours: Three (3) = 45 contact hours
Dates: May 16  – July 21 (4.5 hours/week; 10 weeks)
Days: Tuesday and Thursday evenings
Timing: 6:30 pm – 8:45 pm CST
Venue: Online
Textbook: Muṣḥaf al-Madīnah (students need to be reading from the same edition of the Quran for pedagogical reasons, given the orthographic variations among different versions; this one is the best for such purposes).
Tuition (excluding textbook costs): $600 for the course
