Rewriting the Script: The Rise of Muslim Creatives in Hollywood & Pop Culture
Despite Hollywood’s long history of Islamophobic stereotyping, an increasing number of mainstream American Muslim entertainers is now emerging. As this trend continues, and online culture increasingly globalizes, some Muslim celebrities will not merely enter the stream of pop culture, but come to define it. This course examines the critical role of American Muslim artists in the production of authentic “American Muslim culture,” as age-old paradigms in Hollywood are eroding. It explores not only the ways in which the industry’s appetite for “Muslim representation” is growing, but also how American Muslim artists are uniquely situated to lead the culture, by producing meaningful, inspired, grounded “art,” rather than meaningless, vapid “pop culture entertainment.” Finally, students will be exposed to the “Critical Engagement Theory,” a practical framework for how Muslims can engage with pop culture, while respecting their own personal religious sensitivities. Guest lecturers will include at least two American Muslim professionals working in the entertainment industry, to share their personal experiences and candid reflections on the opportunities and challenges ahead.
